AFM Greece for Foreigners: Complete Application Guide
How foreigners can obtain an AFM in Greece: eligibility, documents, AADE application routes, personal attendance, representatives and safe next steps.
The short answer
For natural persons covered by AADE's current procedure, the Greek AFM and authentication-key request starts electronically through the myAADE service, followed by the identity-verification route offered for the case, including myAADElive or attendance at the competent office. The applicant must provide accurate details, check current exceptions and keep personal credentials private.
AFM Greece for foreigners is the process of obtaining a Greek tax identification number from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue, known as AADE. Start with AADE’s current registration instructions, identify whether you are registering as resident or non-resident, prepare the exact identity and status evidence requested, and complete the identity check yourself or through a formally accepted representative.
Scope and last checked: This guide was checked against AADE, myAADE, gov.gr and the EU Immigration Portal on 24 September 2026. It is practical information, not legal, tax or immigration advice. Your competent AADE service and qualified advisers should resolve case-specific questions.
How does AFM Greece for foreigners work?
AFM Greece for foreigners works through a tax-register application to AADE, followed by identity verification, allocation or confirmation of the number, and access setup where needed. The exact channel and evidence depend on whether you are resident, non-resident, represented, a minor or applying in another special capacity.

What is an AFM and what does it not prove?
An AFM, or Arithmos Forologikou Mitroou, is the unique number used to identify a person or organisation in Greek tax administration. It does not by itself establish tax residence, a right to live or work in Greece, social-security coverage, healthcare entitlement or ownership of an active business.
This distinction matters because the AFM appears in many unrelated workflows. An employer, landlord, notary, bank, utility provider or public service may ask for it to identify you consistently. That request does not mean AADE has decided every other aspect of your status.
The AFM is also different from:
- Taxisnet credentials, which are the username and password used to enter myAADE and connected services;
- AMKA, which is a social-security identifier;
- a residence permit or EU registration document, which concerns immigration or free-movement status;
- a GEMI number or business commencement, which concerns commercial registration or activity;
- a bank account, which is issued under a bank’s customer checks.
If you are planning several Greek registrations, use the moving to Greece admin checklist to sequence them. Keep each identifier and its evidence in a separate record so that one is not incorrectly presented as proof of another.
Who needs an AFM in Greece?
You generally need an AFM when Greek tax administration or a transaction requires you to be identified, but there is no sound reason to obtain one merely because another newcomer did. Common triggers include employment, property ownership or rental, business activity, certain banking and utility relationships, inheritance and formal dealings with public authorities.
The correct question is not simply “Can I get an AFM?” It is “What act requires my AFM, and how should I be registered for that act?” The answer can affect resident or non-resident details, address, representative arrangements and later tax obligations.
Typical applicants include:
- a person taking employment in Greece;
- a buyer, seller, owner, landlord or tenant involved in a Greek property transaction;
- a person starting self-employment or participating in a company;
- an heir or beneficiary in a Greek estate matter;
- a non-resident who needs to complete a Greek tax or administrative act;
- a family member whose individual registration is required.
An AFM can create the ability to interact with the tax system, but it does not answer whether a return is due or where you are tax resident. Those are fact-sensitive tax questions. Obtain advice before starting work, a business, a property letting or another activity with filing consequences.
For immigration categories and rights, consult the EU Immigration Portal. Do not use possession of an AFM as a substitute for the correct visa, residence or work route.
Which application route should you use?
For natural persons covered by the current AADE procedure, the AFM and authentication-key request starts electronically through the “AFM & Authentication Key” service in myAADE. Identity verification then follows the route offered for the case, including myAADElive video identification or attendance at the competent office. Check the current exceptions because guardianship, estates, business records and other special cases may follow a different route.
Begin at AADE’s AFM and authentication-key service, not a search advertisement or an agent’s copied form. Check:
- whether the service covers individuals in your category;
- whether it starts with a digital request, scheduled video identification, in-person appointment or representative submission;
- which tax service is competent for your record;
- the current forms and supporting evidence;
- how originals, translations and authorisations must be presented;
- how the result and credentials are delivered.
The route can change. A page describing one service does not guarantee that every foreign passport, guardian application, estate, business or non-resident case can be completed through it. If the official instructions redirect you to a specific service, follow that route and retain the response.
Do not create multiple applications to several tax offices in the hope that one will be faster. Duplicate requests can create uncertainty about the competent file. If an application stalls, quote the existing reference number and ask for its status or the correct transfer process.
A relocation roadmap can help place AFM registration among other dependencies. It cannot decide tax residence or make declarations for you.
Which documents should you prepare?
Prepare the valid identity document and the application, contact, address, status and representative evidence listed for your current AADE route. Names and dates must match, and foreign records should be translated or authenticated only in the manner the receiving service actually requires.
Use this preparation table as a checking framework:
| Evidence area | What to verify with AADE | Common quality check |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Accepted passport or identity document | Validity, full name, birth details and legibility |
| Application | Current tax-register form or digital fields | Correct applicant type and all mandatory sections |
| Contact | Email and telephone under your control | Able to receive messages and recovery steps |
| Address | Greek or overseas address evidence requested | Exact spelling, postcode and current status |
| Tax status | Resident or non-resident details requested | Consistent with the facts and professional advice |
| Representation | Appointment and representative evidence, if used | Correct scope, signatures and accepted form |
| Foreign documents | Translation, apostille or legalisation if required | Accepted issuer and complete pages |
Do not send a broad bundle of personal records “just in case”. Excess documents can expose private information and create contradictions. Match each attachment to a stated requirement. Redact unrelated data only if AADE confirms that the redaction is acceptable.
Check transliteration carefully. Greek systems may record a name in Greek and Latin characters. Compare surname, given names, order, date of birth, nationality and identity-document number before submission. If another Greek record already exists, provide it so staff can identify a previous AFM rather than create a duplicate.
For questions about authentication, use document and apostille guidance and then confirm the answer with the receiving authority. An apostille verifies the origin of a qualifying public document; it does not correct its content or replace a required translation.
How do you complete the application step by step?
Complete the AFM application by confirming the route, preparing only the required evidence, submitting through the official channel, completing identity verification, checking the issued record and saving the receipt. Record the application reference at every stage.
Step 1: define the reason and registration facts
Write one sentence explaining why the AFM is needed. Record your actual country of residence, current address, identity details and intended Greek activity. If any tax-status answer is unclear, stop and ask a qualified tax professional before declaring it.
Step 2: open the official AADE application
Open the “AFM & Authentication Key” route from AADE’s official service page. Confirm that the page is on an official domain and read the current eligibility, exceptions, document and identity-verification instructions. Note the date checked.
Step 3: prepare and reconcile the evidence
Complete the current form or online request using the identity document as the source of truth. Compare every field with existing Greek records. Arrange accepted translation or authentication where expressly needed.
Step 4: submit through the specified channel
Submit the electronic request exactly as instructed and select or accept the identity-verification route offered for the case. Save the confirmation page, email and reference number. Do not send the same request separately by email unless the service directs you to do so.
Step 5: complete identity verification
Complete myAADElive video identification or attend the competent office personally where required. Have originals and the exact submitted records ready. Answer factual questions yourself. A language supporter may assist only if the service allows it and should not supply answers.
If an Athens visit is required, arrival admin accompaniment can help with preparation, venue logistics and note-taking. The applicant still attends and speaks for their own facts.
Step 6: verify the result
Check the AFM digit by digit and inspect the registered name, identity details, address, email, telephone, competent service and representative information shown. Ask immediately how an error should be corrected.
Step 7: secure the record
Save the official evidence in encrypted storage. If credentials are issued or activated, set them privately and record recovery details offline. Do not place the AFM and password in the same unprotected note.
AADE may request clarification or further evidence. Respond through the named official channel and preserve the request. Processing time depends on completeness, identity verification, appointments and workload, so no fixed duration should be promised.
When can a representative act?
A representative can act only where AADE permits representation and the authority, form and scope satisfy the procedure. Non-resident tax representation and authority to submit a particular request are related concepts, but they should not be treated as identical without checking the current rules.
Ask four questions before appointing anyone:
- Is a representative required, optional or unavailable for this applicant?
- What type of representative or tax representative is contemplated?
- What exact document appoints them, and must it be authenticated?
- Which acts may they perform, for how long, and how is the appointment ended?
Choose the narrowest authority that achieves the legitimate task. Read every declaration before signing. Keep a copy of the representative’s identity and appointment, but transmit it securely.
A representative does not need your personal Taxisnet password to use a formal mechanism. If a person insists that password sharing is the only way they can help, pause and verify the correct AADE authorisation route.
Representation also does not remove your duty to provide truthful information. You should approve factual content and receive copies of submissions and outcomes. For tax advice, returns or resident-status analysis, engage a suitably qualified professional under a clear scope.
What must you do personally?
You must personally perform any identity check, interview, signature, declaration or credential action that AADE reserves to the applicant. You also remain responsible for confirming that the submitted identity and status facts are accurate, even when a representative prepares or transmits documents.
Personal actions can include:
- appearing at an in-person or video identity check;
- presenting an original identity document;
- answering questions about your details and reason for registration;
- signing applicant declarations;
- choosing and protecting account credentials;
- receiving activation or recovery communications;
- approving any formal authority given to a representative;
- reviewing and correcting the issued record.
Do not allow a helper to impersonate you on video, create a recovery email they control or retain your one-time code. Where informal language support is accepted, appointment language support can assist with ordinary communication, but it is not certified interpreting, representation or tax advice.
If you cannot attend a requested appointment, ask AADE whether another official route applies. Do not assume that illness, distance or travel expense automatically permits an informal proxy.
What should you check after issue?
After issue, check the AFM and all linked identity, address, contact, competent-office and representative details before using the number elsewhere. Correct errors through AADE’s official process and keep proof of both the original issue and correction.
Run this review:
- Does the full name match the identity document?
- Are date and place of birth recorded correctly?
- Is the identity-document number current?
- Is the address the one properly declared for this record?
- Are email and telephone controlled by you?
- Is the resident or non-resident treatment consistent with the submitted basis?
- Is any representative correctly named and scoped?
- Have you accidentally been allocated a duplicate AFM?
Then record where the AFM is used. When a bank, employer or utility copies the number, inspect the resulting contract. A single transposed digit can be propagated across systems.
Do not treat AFM issue as completion of business commencement, tax-residence transfer, VAT registration, employment registration or a return. Ask what separate action follows from the activity that prompted the AFM.
How do you protect myAADE and Taxisnet access?
Protect myAADE and Taxisnet access as you would a financial account: use unique credentials, personal recovery channels, multi-factor security where offered and formal delegations instead of password sharing. Verify the domain before signing in.
The safest operating rules are simple:
- navigate from AADE or type the known myAADE address yourself;
- use a password not used on any other site;
- keep your recovery email and telephone current;
- never disclose a password, recovery code or OTP by telephone, email or chat;
- inspect a request before approving it;
- sign out on shared devices;
- review active authorisations and remove obsolete ones;
- change credentials promptly if exposure is suspected.
A tax professional may need authorised access to particular functions. Use the official mechanism and ask what they can view or submit. Keep copies of filed material and confirmation receipts.
The Taxisnet Greece guide explains activation, authorisation and recovery in more detail. A bureaucracy screen-share can support portal navigation while you sign in and submit personally.
Which mistakes delay an AFM application?
The main causes of delay are an unsuitable application route, incomplete evidence, inconsistent names, unclear tax-status answers, duplicate requests and defective authority documents. Security shortcuts can create a larger problem even when they appear to speed up registration.
Avoid:
- using an old form copied from a commercial website;
- selecting resident or non-resident status without understanding the facts;
- omitting part of a double surname or entering a nickname;
- submitting a poor scan with cropped numbers or pages;
- obtaining an apostille when the authority asked for something else;
- failing to disclose a previous Greek record;
- appointing a representative through an invalid or overbroad document;
- submitting to several offices at once;
- leaving without a receipt or reference;
- giving another person your myAADE password or OTP.
When AADE rejects or pauses a request, ask for the precise missing requirement. Record the answer and respond to that point. Do not replace a clear deficiency with a larger unsorted document bundle.
What questions do applicants ask most often?
These answers address common AFM questions without assuming facts that AADE or a qualified adviser must assess.
What is an AFM in Greece?
An AFM is the unique Greek tax identification number issued through AADE. It identifies a person or entity in Greek tax administration and is commonly requested in employment, property, banking, utility and other transactions.
Can a foreigner get an AFM without living in Greece?
A non-resident foreigner may be able to obtain an AFM when there is a valid administrative or transactional reason, but the registration route and representative requirements depend on the case. Confirm the current process with AADE.
Can I apply for an AFM online?
AADE provides digital services and appointment channels, but the available route and identity checks can vary by applicant and case. Start from AADE’s current official instructions and be prepared to attend or use a permitted representative if directed.
Do I need a tax representative in Greece?
Some non-resident cases may require or use a Greek tax representative, while other applicants may proceed differently under current rules. A tax representative is not automatically responsible for paying your tax, but the role and appointment should be confirmed with AADE or a qualified tax professional.
How much does an AFM cost and how long does it take?
Do not rely on a universal fee or processing time. AADE’s tax-number allocation itself may not carry a stated application fee, but representation, translation or certification can cost extra, and timing depends on identity checks, documents, appointments and office workload.
Is an AFM proof of Greek tax residence?
No. Having an AFM does not by itself establish Greek tax residence, immigration status, work permission, social insurance or healthcare entitlement.
Should anyone else use my Taxisnet credentials after my AFM is issued?
No. Never share your Taxisnet or myAADE password, recovery details or one-time codes. Use AADE’s formal authorisation and representative mechanisms when another person is permitted to act.
How was this AFM guide prepared?
This guide was prepared by separating the tax identifier, account credentials, tax status and non-tax registrations, then mapping the practical workflow to AADE and myAADE. gov.gr was checked for the wider public-service context, and the EU Immigration Portal was checked to ensure that tax registration was not presented as an immigration right.
Last checked: 24 September 2026. Check AADE immediately before applying because forms, service channels, competent offices, identity checks and evidence requirements can change. This guide is practical information only and is not legal, tax or immigration advice.
